Nutrition can greatly affect how a pregnant woman feels and how her baby develops. Feeding your baby right starts before it’s even born. Healthy foods help make a healthy baby. And a healthier mom, too! Most importantly, by eating nutritiously while pregnant, you will gain some energy to get through the day.
Just because you are pregnant and craving lots of everything, doesn’t give you a license to eat ‘everything’, nor does it give you a license to ignore your cravings either. Perhaps there is a nutrient that your body is ‘needing’ that is in a certain food. For example, if you are deficient in iron, you might be craving a hamburger or a steak. However, you must do your best to limit your intake, in other words, stop eating at just one hamburger.
Purposefully eat from all five groups of food on a daily basis. In addition, when you are pregnant, you need to drink water, water, and more water! If you get too dry, it could lead to early labor. You need a minimum of half your bodyweight in ounces every day. Add a splash of juice to the water for a bit of flavor.
NOTE: While a woman is pregnant, she should not eat the following foods:
- Unpasteurized milk or soft cheeses
- Raw or undercooked meat, poultry, or shellfish
- Prepared meats, such as hot dogs or deli meats, unless they are heated until steaming hot
